Top 10 Painting Tips

Common mistakes that are made when painting  and best painting tips are as follows;

1)      Not using quality tools

There are times when a roller is the best tool, and there are times when it’s better to use a paintbrush.  There are many different kinds of paintbrushes, and it’s worth the investment to buy the best type of brush for the surface you’re painting and the type of paint you’re using. A bad quality brush will shed bristles and stick onto the paint.

2)      Not properly preparing the surface

Pre-painting preparation work is one of the most important things you can do to ensure a good paint job. Flaking, peeling paint needs to be removed, and a glossy surface needs to be sanded before applying a new coat of paint, otherwise, it won’t stick well. It’s important to wash the walls and ceilings before painting them.  They may not look like they need cleaning; but they do.  Paint looks and stays on better when applied to a clean surface.  Even minute particles of dust can interfere with best results. Fill any cracks with a filler and smooth properly by sanding. In most exterior painting cases, the whole thing will need to be power washed. Improperly preping surfaces can lead to blistering, peeling, and a generally unprofessional finish.

3)      Not Using A Primer

Using a primer will help the paint adhere to the wall, requiring less work when painting after. A primer will help ensure a smoother and longer-lasting paint job. It’s also really important when you’re painting a lighter colour over a darker surface or colour, as it can help you avoid any bleeding or the need for multiple topcoats. A primer really is a must if there are stains on the wall.

4)      Painting a Wet Surface

It’s important that the surface to be painted is dry.  After washing walls, leave adequate time for them to thoroughly dry.  In humid weather, allow even more time for the drying out process.  Problems caused by painting on a wet surface include peeling and blistering of the paint.

5)      Over Applying Paint

You might be tempted to apply just one thick coat to the wall and call it a day, but that’s where drips in the paintwork come from. To evenly distribute paint, rolling off the excess is key.

6)      Cutting In Too Early

If you cut in your edges too soon before you roller the inside, you will have stripes, like a picture frame. The edges should still be wet.

7)      Painting A Second Coat Too Soon

When it comes to painting, we want things done ASAP. But applying that all-important second coat before the first layer dries will completely mess up the whole job. You can end up with visible brush strokes and paint pulling off. Be patient, your paint will tell you how long to wait between layers.

8)      Not Using Tape

Do you have the skills to get straight lines around the woodwork, windowsills and doorframes? If not use some painter’s tape around all the edges and get the nice, clean, professional finish you want.

9)      Brushing When You Should be Rolling

For a large interior area, a roller will do a better job in less time. Select the right roller for your sheen of paint and try to avoid pushing the roller into the wall when you paint.
