Wallpaper Tips to choose the right wallpaper

Choosing wallpaper can feel overwhelming with so many colours, patterns, textures, and styles available. The good news is that finding the right wallpaper doesn’t have to be complicated. By focusing on a few key factors, you can narrow your options and select a design that suits your space, complements your existing décor, and reflects your personal style.

These three simple tips will help you choose wallpaper with confidence and create a room you’ll love for years to come.

1 - Look at the room as a whole

A common mistake when choosing wallpaper is just picking a design because you love it and not thinking about how it will work in the space.

Tip one then is look at the dimensions of the space to ensure the scale of the pattern is right.

Consider these points to help you work this out:

  • Large walls can handle murals, oversized or large scale designs
  • Small scale patterns feel smaller on a big wall
  • In large rooms where you view walls from further away, larger patterns tend to have greater impact
  • If there is a lot to cut around (windows, shelves etc.) use a repeating pattern

A good rule of thumb is that the pattern should feel intentional within the space; large enough to be appreciated, but not so dominant that it overwhelms the room unless that is the intention.

2 - Consider what atmosphere you want to create

What story do you want your room to tell? Because wallpaper plays such a big part of creating the atmosphere in a room ensure the wallpaper fits in.

For example;

  • You have a minimalist Scandi style home – use texture, subtle patterns and earthy colours
  • You want to create a moody, sophisticated media room – use blacks, reds or darker tones with large patterns, Art Deco inspiration, metallic accents

3 - Work with the rest of your decor

Wallpaper should compliment the rest of your space in design and colour.

Look at the furnishings that may not change like flooring, curtains or perhaps a main piece of furniture like the sofa. Match the style to the architecture of the building and main colours in the wallpaper to these aspects to ensure there is a good cohesion in the room.

Tip 3; think of the overall style of home or architectural period of the house and match to that greater interior design scheme to ensure you are thought of your wallpaper holistically.
