How to make wallpaper the artwork for your walls

Using wallpaper as art lets you introduce pattern and personality at a scale that suits your home. From a small framed print to a full wall will change the feel of the whole space.

Choosing wallpaper can start in the same way as choosing art; with a design that makes you stop and look. You might be drawn to the colours, the subject or simply how it makes you feel. It doesn’t have to match every cushion or follow a particular trend; it should just be something you enjoy seeing every day.

Make a whole wall your artwork

Some wallpapers deserve to take centre stage. Sweeping landscapes, illustrated gardens, abstract compositions and large-scale florals can give a room a focal point without needing additional pictures. Here i would suggest looking for a mural that looks like an artist drew an illustration, painted a scene or created a modern art piece. This gives the impression of art but on a grand scale.

Frame wallpaper as a piece of art

If covering the whole wall is not for you and you would prefer your wallpaper to more closely resemble artwork, you can hang the wallpaper within a frame. You dont even need to have it professionally mounted, you can apply timber frames or trims directly to the wall with the wallpaper stuck to the wall as usual.

If you use a custom mural here you can have it scaled to size. Or try a more abstract approach.

How to choose wallpaper to use as art

  • Match the scale to the setting. Small details need a closer look, so a smaller design over a dinign table would work. While larger motifs can be appreciated from across a room and can become the accent wall of a living room or bedroom.
  • Check the composition. Decide which parts of the pattern need to remain visible if ordering panels or a pattern that extends beyond the size of the frame.
  • View a sample in your room. Lighting can change how colours, textures and metallic finishes appear.
  • Plan before cutting or ordering. Pattern repeats and mural layouts affect how much wallpaper you need.
